Course description
The Victorian Studies MA offers students an opportunity to study interdisciplinary approaches to the Victorian period. Prior to 2008, this course was titled MA Victorian Studies.
Module details
Embracing theories and perspectives from English Literature, History, Art History and Museology, Music and Drama, and Religions and Theology, the programme invites students to explore the concept of 'The Victorian' and to engage with key contemporary debates concerning culture, philosophy and society. Typical compulsory and optional course units include: Research Training; Reading the Victorian: A case study of Manchester; National Culture and the Idea of Public Art; Victorian Culture and Society; Victorian Poetry; Nineteenth Century Landscape; Victorian Fiction and Victorian Publishing; Opera and the Victorian Stage; The Humanitarian Subject; Religion in the 19th Century: Traditions and Conventions; Madness and Society in the Modern Age; The Darwinian Revolution; Art in the City: Collecting, Commissioning; Architecture and Modernity; Imperialism's Visual Economies; The City as History; Gender and Popular Entertainment in the Victorian Period; and History and Postmodernism.
