Objectives
This degree is ideal if you want to pursue an interest in the literature, culture and history of nineteenth-century Britain, or study in preparation for a research degree. Two academic Schools at Birkbeck currently contribute to the MA: English and Humanities; and History, Classics and Archaeology. You will be encouraged to raise questions across traditional disciplinary boundaries; all course tutors are committed to an interdisciplinary approach. MA Victorian Studies graduates have an impressive record in competing for AHRC awards for research degrees.

Entry requirements
Entry requirements Flexible: good degree in any subject, although other qualifications may be considered. Prior to interview, you will need to submit a short piece of written work (up to 500 words) on any Victorian topic. If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 7.0 or equivalent is required.

Course description
The core courses will introduce you to different types of primary material and different approaches.
-Core course 1: Progress and Anxiety.
-Core course 2: Nineteenth-Century Culture Wars: Faith, Doubt and Disbelief.
-You will also choose two study options from a range of topics. Typical options include:
-Victorians and Gender
-Sex, Gender and the City
-Writing and Radicalism 1830–1900
-Dickens
-Victorian Poetry
-The Victorian Fin-de-Siècle
-Crime and Society in Victorian England
-Victorian Art
-Victorian Cultures of Death
-The Victorians and the Romantics
-The Victorian Supernatural
-William Morris – Artist, Writer, Socialist.
Dissertation: in the final phase of your studies you research and write a 15,000-word dissertation.
Teaching
The core courses consist of lectures, seminars and workshops. Options are taught in seminar groups. For your dissertation, you will be allocated a personal supervisor.
Assessment
Assessment is by coursework essays and a dissertation: one piece of work for each of the two core courses, a 5000-word essay for each of the two options and a dissertation of up to 15,000 words.
