Vehicle Structures and Safety Master in Science

  • Academic title Vehicle Structures and Safety Master in Science
  • Course description The engineering discipline of vehicle structures and safety has grown rapidly in recent years as automotive manufacturers strive to meet ever increasing market demands, delivering vehicles meeting stringent safety regulations and structural requirements.

    Within the automotive industry it is now widely recognised that the customer is more aware about the importance of safety, which has now become a significant factor in the decision to purchase a vehicle.

    Future prospects

    The advanced engineering knowledge, project management, practical hands-on testing and computer aided engineering competencies acquired by graduates of this course are of particular significance for future careers in the automotive and motorsport sectors.

    In addition the acquired skills and knowledge are transferable to the aerospace and railway sectors amongst others where issues such as weight optimisation and crashworthiness are vital.

    Course content

    Students on this course will study the important specialist areas of;

        * Vehicle body structure design/analysis
        * Crashworthiness
        * Project management
        * Computer aided engineering
        * Advanced simulation

    Working in teams, participants will also undertake a group vehicle structure project with the opportunity to utilise a wide range of industry standard computer software and advanced facilities including a 3D stereo-projection system and the use of a High Performance Computing (HPC) computation cluster.

    The course also requires a major individual project to be undertaken, working either with industry or a university applied research group.
