UG Dip Adult Nursing

Objectives With this course, you can study to become a registered nurse at one of our locations, each of which offers students a choice from the nursing branches: adult; child; mental health; and learning disability (learning disability is only available at Lincoln, Mansfield and Nottingham). All students undergo a Common Foundation Programme. We have a small number of places on the extended option for adult branch students with family commitments who wish to complete the Diploma over four-and-a-half years, taking extended leave to coincide with school holidays. There are no course fees and eligible students undertaking the Diploma receive a non-means tested bursary of ?6,372 from the NHS. This is offered on a pro-rata basis for the four-and-a-half-year extended programme. Additional funding may be available for those of you with children and dependents.
Entry requirements Required subjects: a minimum of five GCSE grades A-C, which must include English and maths (or Key Skills Level 2 in communication and numeracy or QCA equivalent) and preferably a science, or equivalents approved by the University; in all cases, evidence of recent study, particularly at A level or equivalent standard is desirable, as are IT and other key skills

Programme

Year one

The first year of the course is a Common Foundation Programme (CFP) with half the time spent in the School and half in practice settings. The aim is to provide a broad knowledge base designed to introduce you to the role of the nurse and the relevant biological, sociological and psychological aspects associated with caring for patients and clients. You also spend time on two placements gaining experience in adult nursing. Additional placements in a range of settings give an overview of the other nursing branches.

Years two and three

In the Branch Programme (adult; child; learning disabilities; or mental health) you will spend half of your time in School and half in practice. Each branch programme consists of Care Delivery and Management modules relating to your chosen branch, and further theory modules outlining concepts and principles common to nursing. Your practice experience will be in a range of settings.
