The Sky as a Cultural Resource - Short Course

  • Course description Want to engage with the Universe? This hands-on course will to give students an understanding of the cultural heritage and natural philosophy of the sky.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a worldwide event aimed at engaging the citizens of the world to rediscover their place in the Universe. As part of these celebrations the University of Glamorgan is offering individuals the opportunity to engage on a personal sense of wonder and discovery.

This is a modular programme, enabling students to engage further with the sky, both by outdoor learning and personal development sessions. Through outdoor learning, students will further develop hands-on skills in the use of a variety of visual aids. This engagement will develop a more critically informed awareness of aspects of the sky: its culture, anthropology and natural philosophy.

    Course Content

“The Sky as a Cultural Resource” is a module designed specifically for IYA 2009. It will take the learner on a journey of discovery, from the naked eye astronomy of our ancestors to modern telescopic observation; constellations to planets, nebulae to galaxies the learner will experience the wonders the heavens have to offer. This journey of discovery is delivered through a combination of talks and hands on observations (weather permitting) and will provide the learner with an appreciation of the cultural heritage of the sky.

Students will be assessed by a personal journal that will critically communicate evidence of both a working engagement with the sky and a basic understanding of aspects of the sky, including its culture, anthropology and natural philosophy.
