  • Entry requirements Standard Entry Candidates must normally possess an honours degree or a professional qualification, and have at least 3 years management experience. Exceptionally, candidates without these qualifications but who have significant work experience and can demonstrate the potential to meet the learning objectives of the programme, may also be admitted. Plus one of the following: * Other: Students whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate their ability to study in the English language. Entry requires a standard score of 570 in TOEFL or 6.5 IELTS or the equivalent in other tests of English.

  • Course description COURSE INFORMATION
    The MBA is a highly valued Masters level qualification for experienced business practitioners. It is not designed for newly qualified graduates but for those graduates of any discipline who have post-graduation work experience at an appropriate level in an organisation so that they have the opportunity to share with other students on the programme in reflecting on business issues and situations from their own experience.

    Our prestigious MBA programme includes an international residential recently held in South Africa and France. This international residential is professionally organised for NBS and incorporates a range of activities including visits to leading companies, government offices and a full work and social programme.

    What you will study
    All students following the full-time MBA study the following core modules:

    # Business Information Systems and Data Analysis
    # Analysing Self and Organisations
    # Managing for Competitive Advantage
    # Current Issues
    # Strategic Challenges
    # Leading Strategic Change
    # Research Methods and Dissertation Preparation

    The remaining taught modules depend on the chosen specialist pathway. For the general MBA the modules are:

    # International Marketing Management
    # International Human Resources Management
    # International Finance

    At the end of the taught modules all students take part in an international study mission with the aim of learning how organisations in another country are responding to changes in the business environment. Previous missions have visited either South Africa or France.

    The final stage of the MBA is the Dissertation for which students must carry out a research investigation of a topic appropriate to the pathway being followed. Guidance on topic selection and research methods is given through a module which runs during the first and second semesters. The hand-in date for the dissertation is approximately one calendar year after the start of the programme.

    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
    Assessment
    A variety of assessment techniques are used to help develop different skills. After two taught semesters students undertake a piece of individual research in a business-related topic (and for students following a named pathway, related to that pathway) leading to the production of a dissertation that will normally not exceed 15,000 words.

    Your qualification
    The Newcastle Business School MBA offers both a general qualification and also a number of specialist pathways that are then reflected in the title of the award. Initial pathways being offered are Marketing, Finance, Creative Design, Real Estate Management, Information Management, Risk Management, Logistics, Public Sector Management, International Business, Knowledge Management and Tourism Management. The name of the award for students following one of these pathways would then become, for example, The Newcastle Business School MBA (Marketing).

    CAREERS
    The MBA is about developing relevant management and organisational knowledge, both academic and professional. Students will be expected to develop critical reflection skills and engage with organisation and professional theory. Overall, students will develop into modern, well-rounded and outward looking managers with a high concern for customers and colleagues, capable of taking responsibility for and effectively leading projects, budgets and people, capable of making good decisions and improving the performance of themselves, their people, their areas of responsibility and their organisation.
