Course description
This course leads to a City and Guilds 7823 certificate in bookbinding. You will learn a wide range of essential techniques and develop your skills in using materials and designing your own work. Suitable for beginners and students with some experience. You will need to attend a pre-enrolment advisory session. Basic materials included.
What is the course about?
The course contains two units. Unit 1 is the Design for Craft element of the City & Guilds syllabus at this level. Unit 2 will enable students to achieve a good, basic level of bookbinding skills, including choice and use of materials, by completing a range of projects. We will also look at historical and contemporary bookbinding trends.
What topics will we cover?
Students will make
• A flat-backed, limp cover binding with slipcase
• A multi-sectioned, rounded and backed book, case bound in hard covers
• A ‘portfolio’ pf samples which will include a multi-sectioned sample of sewing techniques, sewn headbands, tacketed bindings, Coptic sewing, samples using pamphlet stitching and a phase box.
Techniques undertaken while making the above will include ploughing, edge-colouring, making and using decorative papers, different kinds of endpaper construction and attachment.
The Unit 1 work will include sessions on Colour, Line and Mark Making, Shape and Form and Surface and Texture.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
-Make a variety of bookbinding structures using a wide variety of techniques.
-Choose and use appropriate materials
-Use basic skills and bookbinding knowledge which will complement and support your future bookbinding.
-Select and use design methods and elements in your bookbinding.
What level is the course?
The course is a City & Guilds level 2 certificate course, suitable for complete beginners to the craft, and those with some experience who want to widen their knowledge or repeat and practise techniques
How will I be taught?
By demonstration, individual and group tuition, individual and group work and group discussion.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?
Some basic materials are included in the cost of the course, including the examination fee. Other materials such as board and paper can be purchased from the classroom and students will be expected to provide their own, more specific requirements. You will be advised on this as the course progresses.
What feedback will I get?
By informal assessment at the end of each term, and by feedback from the tutor. Formal assessment will take place at the end of the course on the last evening. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?
Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
