Teaching in Lifelong Learning (MSc - Postgraduate Diploma)
ObjectivesThis innovative and challenging programme is designed to meet the professional interests of practitioners currently teaching in post-compulsory settings.
The programme will appeal to you if you are keen to engage in reflective practice in relation to your professional values, and broaden your knowledge of policies and practices in teaching in lifelong learning. You will be seeking to extend your understandings of teaching and learning by developing theoretical perspectives and engaging in critical debate about teaching in lifelong learning.
For the Postgraduate Diploma – in which teaching is supported by independent study, tutorial supervision and peer support – you will have the opportunity to develop an action research project to support your professional development and to study widening participation and social inclusion. For the MSc you will, in addition, complete a dissertation in an area of particular interest to you and relevant to your work.
You may also wish to continue developing these interests into an MPhil/PhD.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements
You should be currently teaching or training in a post-compulsory setting.
Normally a good first degree or equivalent qualification.
Candidates with the Postgraduate Certificate in Lifelong Learning may progress directly to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc.
Candidates with a postgraduate-level Certificate in Teaching or Teaching in Lifelong Learning will also be considered and may be able to use some modules as accreditation of prior learning.

Course descriptionPostgraduate Diploma
-Module 1: Teaching and Supporting Learning.
-Module 2: Designing and Planning Learning Events.
-Module 3: Assessment, Feedback and Evaluation.
-Module 4: Teaching Practice and Continuing Professional Development.
Plus any two of:
-Module 5: Researching Lifelong Learning.
-Module 6: Widening Participation and Social Inclusion.
MSc
As for the Postgraduate Diploma, plus:
-Module 7: Dissertation.
Please note: not all modules will run every year. Additional modules may become available.
Teaching
Learning and teaching methods are student-centred and combine independent learning with classroom activities, workshops, seminars and tutorials.
Assessment
100 per cent coursework. Modules 1-4 require a portfolio of coursework and include teaching practice assessment, depending on options chosen. Other assessment may include written assignments and seminar presentations. Additionally for the MSc, an independent research study of 10,000–12,000 words.
