Sustainable Engineering PG

  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Honours degree from a relevant engineering, technology or science discipline. Entry may be possible with other qualifications provided there is evidence of relevant experience, and of the capacity for postgraduate study. A limited number of competitive EPSRC studentships are available to UK and EU students.
  • Academic title Sustainable Engineering PG
  • Course description Today's engineers are helping to solve some of the major problems facing society - from effective flood management to more efficient renewable energies and greener transport.

    Our pioneering Sustainable Engineering PG training package combines study in specialist, advanced engineering technologies underpinned with training in sustainability. In practical terms, this includes effective use of materials and energy to mitigate associated environmental impacts, and the application of concepts such as life-cycle analysis, disassembly and re-use within the design process.

    Developed with industrial input, the package will provide you with a solid understanding of modern, sustainable engineering. Awards of MSc, PG Diploma or PG Certificate are available in:

        * Chemical Processing
        * Computer Aided Engineering Design
        * Energy Systems and the Environment
        * Engineering Design
        * Environmentally Sustainable Building Design and Management
        * Integrated Product Development
        * Management of Competitive Manufacturing
        * Marine Technology
        * Technology Management

    Having chosen your specialist theme from above, you will take three generic modules in sustainability with other Sustainable Engineering students before commencing your specialist training modules.

    In the second semester you will apply your learning by working with students from other themes to produce sustainably focussed solutions to industrial problems. Finally, an individual project completes your Masters study.

    You will graduate with an MSc in your chosen theme having studied in an interdisciplinary environment and gained a thorough knowledge of modern sustainable engineering issues.

    Course Structure

    The course consists of three related components.

    Part A: Instructional Modules - three generic modules (12 credits each) from:

        * Design Management
        * Project Work and Project Management
        * Environmental Impact and Sustainability
        * Information Management
        * Financial Engineering
        * Quantitative Risk Analysis
        * Medical Science (conversion module for Biomedical Engineering students).

    Four specialist modules (10 credits each) appropriate to the chosen theme / degree title

    Part B: Team Project Work (36 credits)

    Teams of students from different themes tackle a problem of practical relevance, in close cooperation with industrialists. Field trips and regular progress reports are an integral part of the process.

    Part C: Individual Project Assignment (60 credits)

    MSc students undertake an individual project where they study a selected topic in depth and prepare a thesis for submission.

    Successful completion of seven instructional modules, a team project and an individual project leads to the award of an MSc. Completion of all the instructional modules and the group project qualifies students for the PG Diploma (120 credits). The PG Certificate can be awarded with 60 credits.

    Course Length

    The course starts in late September, with full-time students finishing the following June (Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma) or September (MSc). Part-time students normally take the course over a minimum of two years.
