    The course links together theoretical debates about sustainability at different spatial scales with the practical dimensions of environmental policy formulation and its implementation. The planning system is taken as a reference point because it provides one of the most sophisticated mechanisms for regulating environmental change. Students gain an insight into problem definition and the application of leading-edge solutions to those problems by business, government and regulatory bodies.

    Assessment:

    The modules are assessed through continuous assessment (a variety of seminars, essays, project work and practical excercises) and examinations.

    The MSc Sustainability, Planning and Environmental Policy is suitable for graduates in subjects such as geography, sociology, politics, economics or other suitably qualified candidates. The course is specifically aimed at those people wishing to gain expertise and a critical perspective of research and practice on contemporary sustainability issues. Students gain an insight into problem definition and the application of leading edge solutions to those problems by business, government and regulatory bodies. The course offers knowledge and expertise for developing a career along a research-based route or taking advantage of the increasing professionalisation of jobs in the private and public sectors, including:

        * Corporate environmental policy;
        * Environmental pressure groups;
        * Government departments and environmental agencies;
        * Consultancy.

    The course links together theoretical debates about sustainability at different spatial scales with the practical dimensions of environmental policy formulation and its implementation. The planning system is taken as a reference point because it provides one of the most sophisticated mechanisms for regulating environmental change. It is, moreover, a particularly suitable vehicle for exploring themes related to sustainability (e.g. public participation, Local Agenda 21). The modules in the course address three key dimensions:

        * Principles and processes - how policy goals may (or may not) achieve more sustainable development;
        * Resource sector studies - comparative and in-depth sectoral analysis;
        * Research training - the development of sustainability and planning research practice.

    Course Recognition

    This MSc is recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute as a 'specialist' masters for those who have completed at least a three year RTPI recognised undergraduate spatial planning degree, allowing completion of the RTPI's educational requirements for membership.

    This MSc is also accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, allowing completion of the educational requirement for RICS membership.

    The course consists of a teaching programme followed by a dissertation. Students are required to undertake twelve modules in the taught part of the course. There are six core modules, which are compulsory and students then select option modules from those offered to the value of 50 credits. The taught part of the course is assessed by a mixture of continuous assessment and written examinations.

    The Theories and Principles of Sustainable Development module provides a theoretical base from which to study sustainable development. It shows how the considerations, which underlie sustainable development, differ from those which underlay previous models of development and the extent to which the concept is likely to provide solutions to problems arising from earlier models.

    Dissertation

    The individual dissertation is an important component of the course. A topic is selected by each student in consultation with members of staff. Whilst there are few constraints on the choice of topic, it must address at least one of the core course themes of sustainability, environmental policy and planning.

    Study Visits

    A residential field study visit is undertaken as part of the course. The School does partly subsidise the trip but students must allow for travelling and subsistence expenses.

    Applications/Entry Requirements

    Applicants should normally hold a good Social Science Honours degree. Applicants with good degrees in other disciplines and/or appropriate professional qualifications will also be considered. All students will be required to demonstrate competency in English prior to arrival in the UK. We look for the following standards: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 570 (230 in computer based test).
