Surgical Care Practice (MSc-Diploma)

  • Objectives The aims of the course are to provide an opportunity for students to explore the principles, theory, and practice of surgical care. The course prepares for employment as Surgical Care Practitioners.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:

    The course is suitable for healthcare professionals working in the field of perioperative and surgical care, most notably Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).

    Students admitted to the course should be in possession of:

    * Either a first degree or a UK diploma in the relevant field.
    * Normally, two years clinical/fieldwork education.

  • Course description Course Description:

    The course is offered in full-time mode to Postgraduate Diploma stage, followed by an optional one year full-time, or two years part-time study for students wishing to achieve the MSc award. Demonstrating clinical competence is a requirement in each of the first two years of the programme.

    Modules include the following:

        * Surgical Anatomy;
        * Professional Studies;
        * Clinical Effectiveness,
        * Research and Evaluation;
        * Surgical Care Practitioner Skills (Pre-op, Intra-op and Post-op);
        * Research Methods in Health and Social Care;
        * Surgical Care Practice (Pre, Intra and Post-op) and Developing Surgical Skills.

    The modules enable students to gain theoretical and practical knowledge, and the practical skills in a series of study blocks held in the School of Healthcare Studies. The remainder of the students’ time is spent building upon this knowledge and developing skills through additional theoretical input and practical instruction in the clinical environment during clinical placement periods. Students who wish to achieve the MSc award undertake a dissertation on completion of the taught modules.

    Special Features:

    The programme integrates theory and practice within the practical modules in both year 1 and year 2.

    The programme fully satisfies the requirements of the Department of Health for a Surgical Care Practice programme.
