ObjectivesThe programme aims to provide theoretical and practical training in Structural Engineering, leading to a Masters degree by Examination and Dissertation. The content reflects current and likely future practice in structural analysis, design, appraisal, experimental techniques and the use of computers.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements: For 2008/9, the standard academic entry requirements for a Masters programme (either taught or research) will be a Higher Second UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline. For a Doctorate level programme (e.g. PhD) it will be an Upper Second UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline or a first degree with an additional UK Masters degree (or international equivalent).

The programme comprises compulsory taught course units, optional course units and a dissertation. To be eligible for the award of a masters degree you must complete ten course-units and a research dissertation. You select three optional units. Typical course units include: Advanced Theory of Structures; Reinforced Concrete Structures; Foundations for Structures; Structural Dynamics and Stability; Materials for Structures; Steel Structures; Engineering Project Management; Pre-stressed and Cable Structures; Advanced Project Management; Ground Engineering; Shell Structures; Earthquake Engineering.
Progression and assessment
The programme commences in mid-September and for the first six months you follow a programme of lectures, tutorials and assignments. Course units are assessed by course work assignments, project work and examinations in January and in May/June. The remainder of the academic year is spent on a research project culminating in the submission of a dissertation in September.
Career opportunities
Those graduating from the programmes are equipped to take up a wide range of opportunities in theoretical and applied research or professional posts in project appraisal, implementation and management or geotechnical/structural design and analysis.
