Structural Biology (MRes)

  • Objectives If you want to pursue research training in the interdisciplinary field of structural biology, this degree is ideal. Most of the degree is devoted to a practical project using techniques such as X-ray crystallography, electron cryo-microscopy and image processing, molecular biology, bioinformatics and molecular modelling. Training is also provided in searching and evaluating data in literature and online databases, and in the analytical and presentational skills required by the successful research scientist.

    Research project, dissertation and thesis.

    Taught elements:

    Graduate studies: Computing for Scientists; Use of Scientific Libraries and Databases; Literature Surveys; Oral Presentations; Poster Presentations; Writing Scientific Reports and Papers.
    Protein Structure and Function: Use of the Internet and Online Databases; Protein Synthesis; Protein Geometry; Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Structure of Proteins; Hierarchy of Protein Classification; Protein Families and Superfamilies.
    Protein Crystallography: Protein Crystallisation; X-ray Data Collection and Analysis; Space Group Determination; Replacement; Anomalous Scattering; Molecular Replacement; Interpreting Electron Density Maps; Structure Refinement.
    Techniques in Structural Molecular Biology: Protein Crystallography; Electron Cryo-microscopy and Image Processing.
