Course description
The overall purpose of the programme is to produce professionally competent, reflective and analytical social work practitioners who are able to practice in a variety of settings, with a range of service users, in accordance with National Occupational Standards and expectations identified in the Code of Practice for social care workers. The programme is designed for postgraduates who wish to become registered social work practitioners and provides the flexibility for you to choose a special area of interest in the second year (children and families, adults and community care or mental health).
Course content for year 1
The first year includes learning about social policy and social divisions, law and ethical conduct, the life course, communication skills and the needs of different service user groups.
Course content for year 2
In the second year students learn about research methods, theories of social work intervention, working across organisational boundaries, and will choose a particular area of interest for in-depth learning.
Students have 100 days of practice learning in each of Years 1 and 2, under the supervision of an experienced practice teacher. and are also expected to complete the European Computer Driving Licence or to demonstrate equivalent competence in IT.
Accrediting organisations
Successful completion of the programme enables registration with the General Social Care Council as competent to practice social work in a variety of statutory and voluntary agency settings.
