Short Course Programme East Midlands Mathematics Enhancement Course (EMMEC)
ObjectivesMathematics Enhancement Courses are for graduates with a degree in a subject other than mathematics who wish to train as secondary mathematics teachers.
The course is intended to support graduates as they develop their breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge before they begin an initial teacher training course which would lead to Qualified Teacher Status.
The MEC is designed to support the development of the subject knowledge required for teaching mathematics in secondary schools and develop communication skills and the awareness of the nature of teaching and learning of secondary mathematics. It will also promote mastery of procedural knowledge and understanding of abstract logical connections between different areas of mathematics.
Entry requirementsEntry requirements
The MEC is open to people who have been referred to it by ITT providers – applicants who have been accepted for a postgraduate secondary teacher training course or for a graduate teacher training programme (GTP) on condition that they complete the enhancement course before starting their teacher training course.
Normally, applicants will be graduates in any discipline who ideally have ‘A’ level mathematics or an equivalent or some mathematical knowledge within their degree but who need to improve this before beginning their chosen teacher training course.
