c?????, srpski – Facts about the Serbian language
Serbian is the official language of Serbia, and one of the official languages of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is estimated that there are approximately 12 million speakers of Serbian worldwide.
Serbian is part of the Western South Slavic group of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European family. While it is acknowledged that there are differences today in nuance, vocabulary and usage, Bosnian and Croatian are mutually intelligible with Serbian, having all been integrated into a single language, Serbo-Croat, during the era of communist Yugoslavia. As Yugoslavia broke up, the language also mirrored the break up, with three languages officially formed according to historical, cultural and political lines.
Serbian uses both Latin and Cyrillic alphabets to write in. Both Latin and Cyrillic alphabets have been modified to meet the needs of the Serbian language. There are thirty letters in each alphabet.
