    This is an interdisciplinary MA, taught collaboratively across the Faculty. Course units are offered in a range of areas including European (German, Spanish, French, Russian, British) cinemas, Latin-American cinema, popular Hindi/'Bollywood' cinema, and Hollywood. You will get a good introduction to film and cultural theory and will be given the opportunity to cover issues such as film style, auteurism, theories of stardom and star culture, and new technologies. As well paying attention to close aesthetic analysis the course will encourage you to think more widely and critically about the cultural and social formations to Screen texts and cultures.

    Typical compulsory course-units and optional course units include (subject to staff availability): Screen Research Methodologies, Film Music, Black on Screen, Bollywood Cinema, Directed Reading (Individual screen study option with 1 to 1 staff-student supervision), Authorship and the Studio System, Gender And Sexuality In Contemporary French Cinema, Representing The Holocaust: The Case of Post-War German Cinema, Spanish Cinema Since 1980, Identity and Visual Representation, Science And Entertainment Media, Critical Theory, Black Cultural Studies In Post-Civil Rights America, and MA Dissertation.

    Career opportunities
    This non-vocational Masters degree teaches and develops a range of transferable skills, and thus enables students to keep open a very wide range of career options. Recent graduates have gone on to vocational MAs and Higher Diplomas (e.g. in Film and Media practice), to PhDs in Film and TV Studies, to teaching, to contract researching, or to work in local or national media, commerce or industry.
