This programme consists of the following courses in semester 1
* Social science statistics 1
* Qualitative methods
* Either Language (Czech, Estonian, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Slovak or possibly Hungarian) or the MSc substantive core course, State and society under communism: social and economic frameworks.
In semester 2, you are required to take these courses:
* Research methods for studying Russia and Central and Eastern Europe
* Either Language (Czech, Estonian, Latvian, Polish, Russian, Slovak or possibly Hungarian) or one course from a list of options (see below)
* Either Social science statistics 2 or Advanced qualitative methods.
Students not requiring language training (native speakers / those with a degree in one of the region's languages) will take the MSc core course, State and society under communism: social and economic frameworks in semester 1 and choose an MSc option in semester 2.
Finally, a dissertation (12,000-15,000 words) must be completed during the summer.

* A maximum of one outside option from a cognate department in the Faculties of Arts or Law, Business & Social Sciences.
The department offers MRes students the opportunity to spend a month in the city of Ul'ianovsk which is situated in the middle-Volga region of the Russian Federation. The visit includes intensive Russian language classes and a full cultural programme including visits to Moscow and Kazan. Language/study trips to other countries in the region are also organised in June/July. Some financial support is available from the department to help students fund these trips.
