româna– Facts about the Romanian language

Romanian is the official language of Romania.  It is also the official language of Moldova although for political reasons, it is referred to as Moldovan. Over 20 million people speak Romanian as their first language.  Due to emigration, Romanian speakers are widespread around the world.  Most notably, they can be found in Italy, Spain, the United States, Canada, France and Germany.

Romanian is an Eastern Romance language of the Indo-European family of languages.  Its closest living relations are other languages of the Eastern Romance group of languages: Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian, although some linguists believe these should be considered as dialects of Romanian rather than as individual languages.  However, among the major languages, its closest relations are Italian and French.  The similarity and influences these languages have on the Romanian language are particularly evident from the number of directly borrowed French or Italian words Romanian employs.

The Romanian alphabet consists of twenty-eight letters.  It is based on the Latin alphabet but includes an additional five letters.
