ObjectivesThis programme is currently available. This taught programme is provided by the School of Biomedical & Health Sciences. Follow this link for information about the School, including facilities, funding, and a list of staff research interests. Purpose To provide a thorough grounding in biomedical and molecular life sciences research, enabling you to specialise in a particular area for further study (PhD) or for employment in a research environment. Designed for students wishing to train in a research career
Entry requirementsPeople with a first or 2:1 degree (or overseas equivalent) in a biomedical science-related degree.
- Each student can choose 25 out of 50 expert led workshops.
- The programme offers wide practical experience together with an in-depth research project within an active research group.
- This programme offers a lead into a research career; over 50% of the graduates from this degree progress to a PhD.
This programme provides a firm theoretical and practical training in specialist technical skills, and the opportunity to carry out an in-depth laboratory-based research project.
Programme format and assessment
Laboratory-based research project (equivalent to 50 per cent of programme) based with a research team. You define a project area and we advise on suitability and recommend a supervisor. You take a programme of workshops in transferable, technical skills and specialist technical skills and attend complementary lectures. Assessments: Written examinations, workshop reports, research project, oral presentations.
Programme modules for MSc Biomedical & Molecular Sciences Research
Advanced Biosciences Research Laboratory Techniques
By the end of the course students should be able to: - Understand and follow written experimental instructions, identify key issues & prepare summaries for multi-step experimental procedures. - Carry out advanced biochemistry and molecular biology experiments, analyse, present, and interpret results. - Safely use instruments found in typical bioscience laboratories. - Apply confidence criteria to their results including reproducibility and accuracy estimates. - Prepare experimental reports of laboratory experiments. - Prepare discussion material and be prepared to relate results to published material. - Describe the outcome of work done and identify the key elements in a typical procedure. - Collect data and apply statistical analysis methods, - Identify safety issues in a laboratory environment
Research Project in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences
At the end of the project students should be able to: - Design and carry out appropriate experiments to test a hypothesis. - Interpret results and summarise main findings (conclusions). - Carry out statistical analysis on data. - Keep professional records of work done. - Manage time effectively. - Develop problem solving and trouble shooting skills. - Have the ability to work easily and competently in a laboratory environment. - Analyse data critically and effectively - Write up a research dissertation. At the end of the project and assessment phases students should have developed research skills to a postgraduate standard.
Specialised Techniques Workshops in Biomedical and Molecular Sciences
The module aims to teach specialised technical skills in bioscience disciplines, relevant to students research projects and aims to equip students with particular skills that cannot be easily taught, hands-on, in large classes: for example electron microscopy, in situ hybridization, in vivo electrophysiology, brain perfusion, real time PCR, and neuronal regeneration.
Topics in Biomedical Sciences
By the end of the course students should have: - a consolidated knowledge of the key areas and recent developments in cardiovascular biology, neurobiology, genetics and biochemistry and molecular biology. - an advanced knowledge in areas of current interest to biomedicine and biosciences. - the ability to prepare and present critical reports on topics of interest. - a critical awareness of current & emerging tools employed by researchers in biomedicine and the biosciences. - developed their methods of preparing written and oral presentations associated with ideas and topics. - the ability to apply good laboratory practice codes and be able to complete COSHH forms.
