  • Course description If you are reading this, you may be one of two sorts of people: an undergraduate, possibly on the final year of an academic degree looking for a vocational postgraduate degree to lead you into an interesting, rewarding and lucrative graduate position or a graduate who has a job related to property and would like a Masters degree to facilitate qualification as a chartered commercial property surveyor.

    A career in property has much to recommend it. It is a global workplace with very good employment prospects. You work for corporate, financial institutions, government, public sector organisations and private clients to create property, investment and business solutions transactional and professional advisory structures. You have variety and challenge in your professional work, the ability to specialise and interface with occupiers, investors and developers of property. The need to inspect property means it is not an office bound job. You work with other professionals (for example lawyers, planners and financers( and have the satisfaction of bringing property and people together providing effective advice on a wide range of property scenarios. It is a people orientated job where good communication skills and negotiating ability are important.

    The MSc Real Estate Management degree builds on 20 years of experience in providing surveying education at Northumbria and has been running successfully since 2001. The full-time student intake is the larger cohort attracting students with a diverse undergraduate background and a number of international students. Applicants are encouraged to have had some work experience in the profession however small so the mix of cultural and professional experience adds to discussion of issues.

    Part-time students, whilst being a small cohort, are working in chartered surveying firms or have property responsibilities within their organisations and bring much to the programme. As they pursue the programme they are developing their skills and ability to move towards more responsible position and the Assessment of Professional Competence of the RICS.

    The teaching is by a mixture of learning experiences including lectures, seminars, use of case studies, field studies, simulated practical benefits from close collaboration with practitioners skills sessions. There is a strong emphasis on independent learning and research skills to develop critical awareness of current issues affecting the property maker.

    Your will be required to undertake a piece of analytical reflective academic research that will result in you writing a 20,000 word original dissertation relevant to your Masters degree programme.

    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
    The programme comprises a diverse range of disciplines to equip the student for the role of a chartered surveyor. There is a mix of examination and coursework assessments - these are invariably vocational in nature and are often based on case studies, projects or site visits.

    ACCREDITATION
    The School of the Built Environment entered into a partnership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in recognition of teaching quality, graduate employability, research and student entrance grades. Graduates of this programme will have the necessary qualifications to register for the Assessment of Professional Competence for the relevant faculty of the RICS.

    CAREERS
    The programme is commercial in nature with little specific focus to residential or rural sectors, although many planning, economic and sustainability issues are common to all sectors. The thrust of the teaching relates to the development, letting and management of commercial property such as offices, shops and industrial facilities reflecting UK practice. The teaching relates directly to the day-to- day occurrences in the work environment and as such provides the ideal vehicle todevelop responsibility and career prospects.
