  • Entry requirements Applicants should have one of the following: (i) 2.1 or above in Science (ii) 2.1 or above in a Social Science subject (advice will be given on the suitability of the subject) (iii) a professional qualification and relevant work experience (to be considered on an individual basis) (iv) a medical degree

  • Course description With widespread undernutrition being seen in both developed and developing countries, coupled with rising rates of obesity and diet related chronic diseases, there is a need for well qualified professionals who can work at all levels in public health nutrition.

    This Public Health Nutrition MSc degree course aims to:

        * Equip students with specialist knowledge and practical skills to take an active role in public health nutrition in a range of settings both in the UK and overseas.
        * Develop skills to appraise critically and to evaluate the research of both a scientific and social scientific nature on which public health nutrition practice is based.
        * Facilitate continued professional development and the advancement of Public Health Nutrition practice.

    Future prospects

    There is a recognised emerging need for postgraduate nutritionists who can work comfortably and confidently with knowledge and information of both the natural and social sciences.

    Postgraduate nutritionists currently work in a variety of areas including government departments at local and national levels, for example the Food Standards Agency and Primary Care Trusts, non-government agencies including overseas aid agencies and the food industry and in research.

    Additionally students will learn a range of transferable skills which will equip them to work in a range of other occupations.

    Course content

    All MSc and Postgraduate Diploma students take the following modules:

        * Nutrition and Applied Biosciences
        * Nutrition and Applied Social Policy  
        * Nutrition for Public Health
        * Nutrition, Health and Disease
        * Public Health Nutrition Policy and Programmes, in addition to one optional module

    MSc students also undertake an original research project.
