Psychiatry MSc

  • Objectives The programme aims for students to: -acquire knowledge and skills sufficient to pass the Paper 2 and Paper 3 examinations for Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists -gain knowledge of, and skills in, research in psychiatry, together with knowledge and interest in a broad range of psychiatry or mental health areas
  • Entry requirements This programme is for trainees in psychiatry who wish to develop basic knowledge and skills in psychiatric research and have an interest in pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. The taught component of this programme is composed of the MRCPsych Paper 2 and Paper 3 units plus MSc/Diploma-specific units. Students on the MSc also undertake a piece of supervised research leading to a dissertation.

    The taught component of the programme is composed of compulsory course units that are common with teaching for the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists professional exams (MRCPsych Papers 2 and 3) plus MSc specific units, including research skills.

    The programme consists of eight compulsory course units:

    -Research Methods 1 and 2
    -Psychiatry Theory 1 and 2
    -Psychiatric Specialities 1 and 2
    -Biosocial Sciences
    -Advanced Clinical Psychiatry

    Two course units are taken each term. In the third year, students conduct a supervised research project. Teaching takes place one day a week.

    Teaching is provided by a range of professionals in the field of mental health, including clinical academics and NHS consultants. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used, including lectures, interactive seminars, case presentations and private study.

    Career opportunities
    Students on the course are already employed as junior doctors or specialist registrars in psychiatric units in hospitals in the North West. Graduates either pursue careers in academic psychiatry, or progress as NHS Specialist Registrars and ultimately consultants
