PSC Professional Skills Course

  • Objectives The Professional Skills Course (PSC) is an integral part of the training scheme approved by the Council of The Law Society in May 1990. The course has to be completed by trainees during their two year training contract. The Faculty of Law, Bristol Business School, and the College of Law have co-operated to present a PSC in Bristol which has been approved by The Law Society. The aim of the PSC is to build on the foundations laid in the Legal Practice Course and to ensure that during the training period all trainee solicitors receive formal instruction in those practical matters which are best studied while working in practice. The Law Society has stated that it intends to take a practical approach to the provision of the course whilst ensuring that high quality is maintained. Course tutors are drawn from the Faculty of Law, Bristol Business School, the College of Law and from legal practice.
  • Entry requirements Applicants must have successfully completed the Legal Practice Course
  • Course description Content

The course is divided into three core modules as follows:

-Advocacy and Communication Skills (three days)
-Financial and Business Skills (three days)
-Client Care and Professional Standards (two days)

In addition to these core modules, trainees will have to attend the elective element of the course. Tuition in these electives must total at least 24 hours (four days).

All the modules will be presented on a face-to-face basis rather than by open learning. We believe that this allows you far more involvement in the PSC, with the greater flexibility of discussion and debate on particular issues of concern.

The PSC must be completed prior to admission as a solicitor. You cannot apply for admission as a solicitor until you have satisfactorily completed the requirements of the PSC.

    Assessment
There are examinations and appraisals in some modules.
