    This programme enables the development of contemporary public sector management within a professional framework. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a range of compulsory modules as well as a module that they can select themselves from the portfolio. This could be a work-based option or a module that extends skills in major incident management, managing change or child protection (i.e. working with families).

    You will enhance your knowledge and understanding of working within an interprofessional team and develop your supervisory skills. You will be motivated in your own personal and professional development and in development strategies for your team. The programme includes opportunities to learn with others from varying professional groups and to develop communication skills to deal with difficult situations. You will gain critical insight into the evidence base surrounding public sector management and professional practice and will undertake a research project or literature review in order to complete the honours programme.

    Course content

    There are six 15-credit modules and one 30-credit research project that complete this programme. Five of the 15-credit modules are compulsory: contemporary issues in public service management; working interprofessionally; communications and role development; personal and people development; and preparation for research. You will take an optional level-3, 15-credit module which you can select from the portfolio relevant to your specific role or situation, provided you meet the entry criteria for that specific module. The programme commences in September 2007 and is normally taken over two years part-time. Students may opt to undertake the programme full-time.

    Students not in full-time employment but who wish to use this as an opportunity to enhance their career progression, may wish to explore new aspects of public sector management through elective opportunities. This programme also suits those who wish to study without requiring a clinical or work placement.

    Assessments are designed to enhance your academic and professional skills and use varied methods. You will be required to work with other students on seminars and interactive enquiry-based learning as well as on individual assignments. Learning methods are also dynamic and stimulating. The team delivering the Professional Practice programme draws on expertise from across the University to ensure a vibrant and stimulating approach to learning.
