Product Engineering (MSc)

  • Entry requirements Standard Entry Applicants should possess one of the following: - A good honours degree in an engineering discipline which includes study of appropriate foundation topics. - A good honours degree in a scientific or technological discipline plus relevant industrial experience - Considerable relevant industrial experience supported by evidence that the work has required use of a wide range of applicable analytical techniques.
  • Academic title Product Engineering (MSc)
  • Course description COURSE INFORMATION
This innovative Masters programme encourages students to take a holistic view of the total manufacturing process from design through to the finished product. The emphasis is very much on work involving real industrial problems, with more than 50% of this programme based on projects linked to local companies.

The programme begins with formal study of some key enabling technologies.

Opportunities exist to tailor parts of the programme to match your specific requirements and also to undertake the MSc project within your company working full-time on an appropriate task under joint supervision.

    Year 1

Solid Modelling and Prototyping Computer modelling is central to modern design because one single description of each component can be used for design optimisation, assembly, construction and NC manufacture. This module uses parametric 3D solid modelling to represent shapes which can be analysed using finite element techniques to perform the necessary parameter optimisation.

Time to Market Reduced design and development time is a key modern requirement and various techniques may be used to achieve this. Those studied on this programme include concurrent engineering and rapid prototyping.

Materials Process Modelling This module uses specialist adaptive Finite Element Software to model forming and moulding processes.

Surface Modelling and Moulding Many components have complex surfaces to meet either market or functional requirements. This module introduces techniques for modelling surfaces.

Technology Review You will choose a topic where you will investigate the current state-of-the-art in a topic area of your choice, and report upon the commercial implications of current developments in the area.

    Year 2

Manufacturing Systems Design This module covers the analysis and design of manufacturing systems to provide a rapid response to customers' requirements.

Design for Quality This module considers the interactions between the three themes of the programme; design, use of materials and manufacture and how systems to ensure optimum solutions are developed.

Precision Manufacture Accuracy in manufacture depends on both the tools used and the monitoring systems in place. Particular attention is given to topics that are currently the subject of research at Northumbria University, e.g. laser interferometry and in-process gauging.

Investigative Project This project will involve the detailed analysis of a typical product to examine its structural integrity and the stresses imposed upon it by its particular duty cycles.

    Year 3

MSc Thesis The MSc thesis is undertaken in the third year. The thesis should be conducted (by agreement), in the company employing the student under joint supervision.

    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
The emphasis is very much on project work involving real industrial problems. More than 50% of the programme is project work, which should be based upon issues relevant to industry, allowing students to focus on areas of individual interest which also benefit the employer.

There will also be a viva voce examination based on the thesis. The taught modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations.
