Postgraduate Diploma-MSc Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Monitoring

  • Objectives The aim of this part-time programme is to provide an advanced education in the theory and practice of environmental toxicology and pollution monitoring. The course focuses on the strong legislative regulation of man-made pressures on the environment, and in particular on the control of emissions to water, air and soil. The impact of such legislation creates a need for trained personnel in the regulatory agencies, in the companies subject to the legislation, and in those other organisations and agencies involved in the provision of support activities such as monitoring and remediation.
  • Entry requirements Entry Conditions The minimum requirement for entry into the PGDip/MSc in Environmental Toxicology & Pollution Monitoring is either a good second class honours degree in an environmental/biological/related subject or an equivalent relevant professional qualification and at least three years work experience. Exceptionally, candidates who do not satisfy these requirements may be admitted by virtue of professional achievement and related work experience.
  • Academic title Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Monitoring
  • Course description The programme is delivered entirely via the internet and due to the flexible nature of distance learning, the course is ideally suited to individuals already working in the environmental sector and wishing to continue their professional development by part-time education. Previous students include employees from government agencies, private research laboratories and environmental consultancies.

The specific objectives of the course are to develop:

    1) An understanding of the general mechanisms of toxicity in humans, organisms and ecosystems, and the basis of setting environmental quality standards.
    2) Instruction in the design of environmental monitoring programmes, the analysis of data, and the selection and use of appropriate environmental models.
    3) An understanding of the behaviour of emissions to water, air and soil, the legislative controls on these, and the main associated environmental problems.
    4) New and synthesise existing knowledge and skills necessary to understand and analyse environmental data.

Those students who progress to the MSc element will carry out a research project on a topic related to Environmental Toxicology & Pollution Monitoring which will draw upon the material covered in the taught Postgraduate Diploma modules.

    Duration and Mode of Attendance

There are four modules for the PGDip (120 credit points) covering:
    1) Environmental Toxicology
    2) Water Management
    3) Pollution Monitoring
    4) Environmental Data Analysis.

The MSc requires successful completion of the PGDip plus a further research project module (60 credit points). Each module runs sequentially, with one module per semester (no summer semester modules). The research project for the MSc is normally completed directly after successful completion of the PGDip.

The course is part-time and is offered entirely via the internet. This widens access for students who would otherwise be unable to engage in postgraduate study and gives them flexibility in terms of time, location and workload.

    Professional Recognition

This course is fully accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences.
