    The Programme

This programme has been developed within the newly established MRes matrix creating a research environment for all courses delivered at postgraduate level.

This new Masters programme Art in Public has evolved from current complex concerns for the role of art and artists in a dramatically changing society under the influence of two main interlinked societal trends: globalisation and digitisation.

It engages in the interrogation of the civil ‘territories’ of art and the modes of practice to inhabit and develop them. The programme seeks to develop testing modes of working that are dialogic, participatory, interventionist and collaborative in intention and structure. These practices are embedded in a larger context, often cross-connected with social movements of globalised, networked societies. In developing these practices, this course aims to re-imagine the relationship between the contexts of the local and the global.

Students are expected to be highly self-motivated and able to undertake individual research from the start. The programme has been designed for creative professionals who seek to acquire knowledge and skills in practice and intervention in the complex public territory of art and civil society.

Based in Belfast, where experimental modes of interventionist and engaged art practices have been developed in contested spaces for many years, the MA Art in Public aims to draw on and build from this context. Public is seen as neither a pre-existent substance nor an immutable terrain. Rather, public practices are themselves involved in permanently constituting plural public spheres in a constant state of negotiation.

Throughout the programme students will work with external partners and be expected to develop innovative art practices.
