Postgraduate Diploma Assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia)

  • Objectives The aims of the course are to offer specialist training in assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia). The course builds on the PGC: Teaching Adult Dyslexic Learners in Higher Education. It consists of three 20 credit modules at M level. The course is offered within the Department of Education.
  • Entry requirements PGC: Teaching Adult Dyslexic learners in Higher Education (or equivalent). All trainee assessors need to be computer literate. All trainee assessors need to find a placement in a HEI where they can undertake two full diagnostic assessments, one of which must be video recorded and presented as a DVD.

    June block core module:

    -Assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) Theory

    Autumn semester core module:
    -Assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) Practice


    Spring or Autumn Semester core module:
    -Research Methods in Education and the Dissertation

    Optional modules:

    Practitioner Research: A critical evaluation of professional practice
    -Applying Learning Technologies
    -Independent Study Unit

    Only students, who have completed Research Methods in Education and the Dissertation will be allowed to proceed to the Dissertation in order to complete the MA.

    Assessment
    Assessment methods include two 5,000 word essays and two full diagnostic assessment reports, one of which must be video recorded.

    Career opportunities
    Currently there is a need for trained dyslexia assessors in HE and FE. The PGC:TADLHE Course has been accredited by the BDA for Approved Teacher Status FE/HE. Application is being made for Accreditation of the PGD. The University works with other London HEIs to provide dyslexia assessment opportunities for trainees.

    Attendance & duration
    Part-time (day or eve): one year. The Spring semester runs from February to June. The Autumn semester runs from September to January
