  • Course description The course provides students with the opportunity to undertake an advanced and intensive study of Irish writing in English from the sixteenth century to the present. The academic environment of the University, which is one of the leading centres of the study of Irish literature in English worldwide, introduces students not only to recent developments in research, but also to the research methods and techniques involved in the study of literature as an academic discipline.

    Duration and Mode of Attendance

    Full-time:         
    Postgraduate Diploma: two semesters (normally October – June); MA dissertation to be submitted by the end of September, with an optional writing-up period available until the end of December

    Part-time:           
    Postgraduate Diploma: four semester (normally October – June of the following academic year); MA dissertation to be submitted by the end of January

    Structure and Content

    In the first instance, students enter a taught course leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Irish Literature in English; the course consists of four modules covering the development of Irish writing in English from the early modern period, through the nineteenth century, the period of the Irish Literary Revival, the mid-twentieth century, to the present day. On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma, students may proceed to the MA part of the programme by undertaking a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words.
