Postgraduate Civil Engineering

  • Academic title MSc/PgDip Civil Engineering
  • Course description This is a general Masters course in Civil Engineering with taught modules in engineering mechanics, modelling, management, procurement and economics, all delivered in one-week intensive blocks. There is also an integrating group project, and an individual research project.

    Future prospects

This programme of study is ideal for students wishing to pursue an academic or research-orientated career, and for those seeking employment within the public and private sector.

    Course content

This general Masters in Civil Engineering is designed for engineers in employment. It satisfies the requirements of a Matching Section for BEng graduates who need additional education to reach Chartered Engineer status and is approved as such by ICE. The course has been developed, and will be delivered, in collaboration with civil engineering employers.

The course can be taken full-time or part-time. Tuition for each module is in a one-week intensive block. For full-time students, each one-week block is followed by a two-week period for study and assessment. For part-time students in employment, each one-week block of tuition is followed by a five-week period for study and assessment, and there is scope for the study and assessment to be work-based or work-related.

The list of modules is below (each delivered in a separate block, with the exception of the Group Project).

    1. Modelling and analysis
    2. Environmental modelling
    3. Construction procurement and law
    4. Project management
    5. Construction economics
    6. Organisational theory and behaviour
    7. Group project (double)

Following these modules, training in research methods is given in preparation for the research project. Topics are chosen in discussion with academic staff, and a wide range of potential areas is available. For part-time students, this part of the programme starts in the summer of the second year and the normal period for part-time completion of the MSc is a little over two years (in total).
