ObjectivesWe aim to provide a thorough grounding in the range of participatory approaches to social research and to develop a critical and analytical perspective of participatory social research and evaluation. The course equips students with the skills appropriate to a variety of data collection and analysis employed in participatory research and evaluation. Students will develop an appreciation of the methodological epistemological, ethical and political aspects of participatory research. The course also aims to develop student's understanding of how different communities (geographic, ethnic, cultural and communities of practice) participate in social research and evaluation.
Entry requirementsApplications are accepted from students from a variety of backgrounds. Applicants will usually have a good first degree in a social science or related discipline. However, the overriding criterion is the ability to demonstrate a knowledge base, academic skills and motivation. Holders of professional qualifications form a relevant area of practice, for example education, housing, health, social work or practical work experience in a relevant area including data handling, information management and other research-related activities are encouraged to apply. Applicants who wish to convert from other disciplines will also be favorably considered.

Assessment
Assessment methods are varied and include preparing research proposals, designing questionnaires and surveys, analysing data, critical reviews of research, using software packages, essays, and independent research leading to the dissertation.

The course is particularly suited to students who currently or wish to work as social researchers or evaluators in the private and NGO/ Voluntary sectors. This Certificate additionally offers those with commissioning, policy development and research/evaluation management opportunities to develop or enhance their career prospects in these areas.
