Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
ObjectivesThe programme aims to enhance experienced counsellors’ theoretical, research and practice-based knowledge of CBT in order to incorporate it into their own therapeutic work, and to enable them to progress to further postgraduate study within the Counselling and Psychotherapy programme.
Entry requirementsApplicants should hold a degree or equivalent, and be qualified and experienced counsellors who have already undertaken substantial training in counselling in a model other than CBT. They should ideally be BACP or UKCP accredited or eligible to apply for professional accreditation.

Course descriptionCourse modules
Students are required to complete three compulsory modules.
-Module 1 offers an introduction to the principles and practices of CBT, focusing in particular on its use on treating forms of anxiety and depression, and in working with clients with low self-esteem.
-Module 2 extends students’ understanding of CBT principles and practices by exploring the ways in which they can be adapted to fit specific clinical diagnoses. Students are introduced to the DSM-IV diagnostic system, and will also learn about CBT interventions for social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
-Module 3 further extends students’ understanding of CBT principles and practice by considering CBT interventions for personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. This module also aims to introduce students to recent innovations in CBT theory and practice including the use of imagery and metacognitive interventions.
Teaching and assessment methods
Modules are assessed by an essay or tape assignment, and a reflective learning journal.
