Postgraduate Certificate in Molecular Biology in Medicine by Distance Learning

Entry requirements You are normally expected to possess at least one of the following: i) BSc Honours with First or Second Class Honours in a biomedical science subject or a subject area closely related to the course ii) FIMLS/FIBMS/GIBiol/GRIC or other professional qualification in a relevant subject iii) BTEC HNC/HND plus FIBMS Primary or PgCert Biomedical Science (usually 60% minimum) iv) Other recent, proven ability to study successfully at postgraduate level in the particular area or qualifications deemed suitable by the course leader. In addition, applicants must normally: i) have at least one year’s recent, appropriate laboratory or professional experience, and ii) be currently working in a laboratory area relevant to the course. Applicants with non-standard qualifications or experience may be considered for entry to this course but should discuss this with the Course Leader before applying. Applicants must have access to a PC with a CD-ROM drive and an Internet connection with e-mail facility.

Course description This course uses Internet Technology and requires no attendance at the University. Dedicated web sites and a course CD-ROM provide most of the teaching and learning material. The course runs twice a year (October and March) and is aimed primarily at part-time students in employment in medical laboratories and research institutions in the UK and abroad.
Students follow the same syllabus and complete the same coursework and examinations for each module as students who attend the University for lectures, tutorials and other sessions. The learning outcomes of the course, and the educational benefits on completing it, are identical to students taking the modules by normal attendance mode.

The course is designed to meet the needs of practising scientists requiring updating in the theory and practical uses of molecular biology in medicine. This includes the principles of recombinant DNA technology and gene manipulation and their applications in disease diagnosis and therapy.

Following the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Molecular Biology in Medicine by Distance Learning, students can be issued with CPD (Continuing Professional Development) credits by the University as approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for modules from the School of Biosciences portfolio of Masters degrees in biomedical science. Also, students may, with the agreement of the appropriate Course Leader, use some of the credits gained on the course for APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) onto other postgraduate courses in the School, such as the MSc Medical Molecular Biology, MSc Biomedical Sciences and MSc Medical Microbiology.
