Postgraduate Certificate in Advising for Language Learning (online)

  • Objectives The programme aims to respond to particular demands placed on language staff within Higher Education and comparable settings and help them to provide effective learning settings, making full use of facilities available with modern technology. It therefore offers a recognised qualification for the new profession of Language Adviser.
  • Entry requirements The Postgraduate Certificate in Advising for Language Learning is designed for language graduates or professionals interested in developing a career as a language teacher, language adviser, material designer or manager of a language centre. They will also have an active interest in promoting autonomous/self directed learning for languages.
  • Academic title Postgraduate Certificate in Advising for Language Learning (online)
  • Course description The programme focuses on the following areas:

-language learning and teaching (including assessment)
-the application of several technologies in language learning and teaching and the understanding of the role of e-tutoring
-the establishment of supportive environments for autonomous language learners, including self-access centres for language learning (an area in which the Department has achieved an international reputation as a result of the success of SMILE, a nationally funded project)
-The programme is delivered online using Merlin, an electronic environment developed at the University of Hull, and will give you first-hand experience of using a system of this type. A particular advantage of an online programme is the flexibility it offers. The programme is available full-time or part-time and there are arrangements that allow students to take individual modules and subsequently apply to transfer to the PG Certificate programme. This is of particular help for students who are combining their study with full-time employment.

    Advising for Language Learning
    Module Details

    Semester 1

    Language Learning

Language Learning provides an introduction to recent research on second language learning, its relation to teaching and the role of individual differences in language learning. The module focuses on the learner and primarily on the learner's linguistic behaviour, rather than the language to be learnt or teaching methodology. It examines learning processes both in and out of the classroom and explores implications for language teaching.

    Semester 2

Management of Open Learning for Languages

Management of Open Learning for Languages explores issues of open and distance learning in relation to language learning. It examines the implications of open and distance learning for learning environments and materials development. It also considers strategies for supporting language.

    Year long (Semesters 1 & 2)

    Advising for Language Learning

Advising for Language Learning examines the role of the language learning adviser as a new professional, his/her professional skills and changes in the roles of other language teaching professionals. Emphasis is put on the use of language as a pedagogic tool and discourse practices which contribute to facilitating learning, and specifically learning of a language other than your own.

    Assessment
Most of the modules are assessed through a combination of participation in online discussions, essay and/or project work.
