Philosophy MA

  • Objectives The MA in Philosophy programme offers in-depth training and discussion in a range of topics in analytical philosophy and (if desired) political philosophy.
  • Entry requirements Our MA programmes are suitable both for those who intend to study for a PhD afterwards, and for those who simply want to spend an extra year widening their knowledge of philosophy and researching a particular topic in depth before going on to pursue a career outside academia.

    The programme consists of seven course units, two of which (the Philosophy MA Seminar and Philosophical Methods) are compulsory, and a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words. Available course units may include metaphysics; epistemology; philosophy of social science; philosophy, religion & society; Russell; Wittgenstein; language & reality; ageing, autonomy & resources; normative analysis & moral reasoning; theories of rights; and justice & pluralism. All our MA course units are run specifically for postgraduate students.

    The dissertation is supervised by a member of staff with expertise in the relevant topic. Help with planning and preparing to write the dissertation is provided within the Philosophy MA Seminar.
