  • Entry requirements Applicants should have: -an honours degree in psychology (normally 2.2 or above) -Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society -relevant counselling or therapeutic experience is also desirable, for example NHS psychology assistant, paid or voluntary counselling work -satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure.

    Introduction to Counselling Psychology

    This module covers all of the major theoretical paradigms within counselling psychology and provides core teaching on ethics and ethical decision making processes.

    Clinical and Experiential Training
    This module provides input on clinical assessment and formulation skills, risk assessment and developing your clinical skills.

    Cognitive Behavioural Approaches
    You will be introduced to cognitive behavioural therapy and how it is applied to a variety of common clinical issues.

    Psychodynamic Approaches
    This module introduces you to a psychodynamic way of thinking and to models of brief psychodynamic therapy.

    Applied Research Methods
    You will study quantitative and qualitative research methods.

    Counselling Psychology Project
    You will complete a research project if you wish to do the MSc component.

    Assessments methods are varied and include exam, case presentations, essays, reviews, client studies and process recordings.

    You can study the postgraduate diploma either full time (one year) or part time (two years). The MSc component will usually take an additional six months to complete.

    Course structure
    The course has two stages: the postgraduate diploma (PgDip) and the master of science (MSc) award. Students who successfully complete the diploma may go on to produce a research dissertation, which will entitle them to the MSc award. Modules include Introduction to Counselling Psychology, Clinical Practice and Experiential Training, and Counselling Skills Theory and Practice.

    Professional accreditation
    You will undertake your own personal therapy and therapeutic work with clients under supervision, and you will need to obtain appropriate work placements.

    Careers
    Graduates of this course will need to meet further requirements before being eligible to apply for Chartered status with the British Psychological Society. The University also runs a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (full time), which upon completion leads to eligibility for Chartered status.
