  • Objectives The key aim of this postgraduate course is to produce capable and effective personnel and development professionals. Through the provision of relevant knowledge and understanding, individuals will develop the key people management and development skills and competencies associated with this discipline of Business and HR. The Postgraduate Diploma is achieved through meeting the educational standards contained in fields one, two, three and four of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's (CIPD) Professional Development Scheme, and leads to graduate membership of CIPD.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirementsA degree, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the University, along with at least two years’ experience in an HR environment (or the equivalent).

    Optional modules (candidates must choose one of the following):

    -Career Management and Development or Management Development
    -Employment Law
    -Performance Management

    Accreditation
    Nottingham Business School has an established reputation for providing high-quality CIPD courses and has been recognised as a Centre of Research Excellence by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

    Assessment
    With the exception of one module, each is assessed via an examination and coursework. In addition, you will be required to write a 10,000-word Management Research Report on a work-based topic that you have researched, and submit a portfolio of your continuing professional development.

    Course content
    To ensure that you gain the qualification and skills appropriate to your current employment or future career, you can choose to specialise in one of the following routes:

    Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management
    This route allows you to select any of the optional modules and undertake the management research project in any discipline.

    Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Development
    This is route is specifically designed for human resource development/learning and development practitioners. You will study the Career Management and Development module and undertake the management research project in a learning, training or development discipline.

    Postgraduate Diploma in Employment Relations
    This route is specifically designed for employee relations practitioners. You will study the Employment Law module and undertake the management research project in the discipline of employee relations or law.

    Guidance will be provided to help you to decide on the appropriate route to undertake.

    Employability and careers: life after university
    CIPD Graduates with five years HR experience can apply to be upgraded to Chartered Members MCIPD and those with 10 years experience may apply to become Chartered Fellows FCIPD.

    Graduate employability
    After successful completion of this course students will become graduate members of the CIPD. Graduates of this course have gone on to become Senior HR practitioners.

    How do you study?
    We aim to develop your skills by:

    -utilising your individual life and work experiences;
    -applying theory to relevant organisational contexts, both real and simulated;
    -focusing on group as well as individual activities;
    -incorporating a wide range of teaching and learning materials.

    While some teaching and learning will be centred on lectures to develop your knowledge and understanding of certain issues, classes will typically adopt a workshop approach in order to involve and engage you in a shared learning process.

    Generally, in the first year you will attend one afternoon and evening weekly. There will be occasional whole-day sessions (i.e. 9 am-5 pm). In the second year there will be full day sessions and study blocks.

    There will be a requirement for delegates to attend a three day residential event during the second year of the programme.

    Inductions
    The course commences with a two day induction held in September.
