Course descriptionThe course is designed to improve your critical knowledge and understanding of BME Mental Health issues within the community, including:
-Historical and current concepts, policy, law and multi-professional services in BME mental health and distress
-Theory and Practice in Community Development work
-Participatory, emancipatory and reflective research methodology used to work in partnership with and within communities
-Evidence based practice in mental health promotion with BME communities to promote good mental health, challenging and alleviating current discrimination
Course Content
The full PgCert comprises 4 Masters Level modules:
Race Equality in Mental Health : Explores the concepts, theories and practice development in mental health as they relate to BME individuals, including racism, discrimination and prejudice and the effects on mental health service delivery to BME communities.
Community Development Work: Develop effective, community-based responses to the causal factors of BME mental distress; increase your awareness of the definitions and politics of community development and cultural capability as stated in the Governments Delivering Race Equality document.
Community Profile: Gives you the skill and knowledge required to undertake and disseminate and effective, critical and comprehensive community profile.
Reflective Practice in Community Development: Prepares you to plan and develop your own learning and practice and the learning of community groups, gain management and leadership skills and take part in mental health promotion work with BME communities.

-Teaching and learning also includes a blend of lectures, seminars, role play and video work, all grounded in issues on the BME Mental Health/Community Development agenda
You will find us on the Allerton Campus of the University which includes the Mary Seacole Building, a brand new development with state-of-the-art rooms, lecture theatres and offices, providing some the most up-to-date facilities in the UK including wheelchair access and hearing loops in some rooms.
Since this course is delivered at postgraduate level, you will be expected to take responsibility for your own independent research, critical thinking and learning. Our diverse staff group consists of community workers, activists and service users as well as experienced academics and administrators. We are here to provide you with information, to share our experience, research and knowledge and importantly, to support your study.
