PGCE Secondary

  • Objectives Students specialise in one of the following subject areas: * Applied ICT * Business Education * Design and Technology * English * Information Communications Technology (ICT) * Mathematics * Music * Biology (with Science) * Chemistry (with Science) * Physics (with Science) * Engineering Students who specialise in one of the sciences are also expected to teach two sciences up to GCSE. In addition, all trainees take Education and Professional Studies. This develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a first teaching post in a secondary school, and provides a foundation for further professional development.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements * Relevant degree or equivalent. GCSE/O-level, or equivalent in English and Maths at Grade C. * In addition, candidates are encouraged to demonstrate an interest in and awareness of current secondary practice, preferably through recent school experience. * You will also need to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)check.

    Applied ICT modules:

    -Education and Professional Studies
    -The ICT curriculum: 11 - 14
    -The Applied ICT curriculum: 14 - 19
    -Planning, teaching, learning and pedagogy
    -Monitoring and assessment of ICT in practice
    -Developing professional skills and competences

    Course content
    The course aims to develop: An understanding of the specialist subjects in the context of the National Curriculum; An understanding of the principles involved in the teaching and learning of those subjects across the full age and ability range; The professional values and practice, subject knowledge and understanding commensurate with particular subject specialisms; An understanding of how children learn and how they develop cognitively, socially and physically; The understanding, skills and personal qualities necessary for managing the learning environment.

    Assessment
    University based Subject Application Studies and Education and Professional Studies are continuously assessed by course work on a modular basis. Separate, formal assessment also takes place in practical teaching.

    Students are required to pass three skills tests in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT during their training year. Qualified Teacher Status cannot be awarded until these tests have been completed.

    Resources and facilities
    Facilities include a range of well-equipped learning environments on the Clifton campus. The newly built Ada Byron King building has state-of-the-art teaching rooms and ample work stations. The refurbished Lionel Robbins building has several teaching and seminar rooms. For Design and Technology and Engineering students practical provision will be at appropriate locations within the city.

    Accreditation
    Successful completion of the course will lead to recommendation for QTS.

    Qualifications achievable
    The award of PGCE is offered at two levels;

        * Professional Graduate Certificate in Education
        * Postgraduate Certificate in Education - where Masters-level credits can be gained.

    Both are recognised teaching qualifications, but the postgraduate award will allow fast-track entry to Masters courses. The choice of which qualification to take will be made while on the course.
