PGCE Secondary Mathematics

  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Normally GCSE mathematics and English language at grade C or above (or equivalent). We will consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs. You must also have a degree in mathematics or a subject which is strongly mathematics-related. Normally this will include the successful completion of the equivalent of two years of mathematical study. A good application will include • subject content. You may be advised about opportunities to develop your subject knowledge before starting the course, if this is considered appropriate. • mature reflection on your own education and any recent school experience. We strongly advise you to visit a secondary school mathematics department before applying. Some voluntary work experience in a school would also be useful. Applicants for the part-time route must normally live within 80 miles of the University. We consider each application on its merits. Interviews are part of the selection process for this course. As you will be working with children, you will be required to complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms. We welcome applications from people seeking a career change, and we actively encourage applications from those groups under-represented in teacher education, in order to ensure that the teaching profession represents the diverse nature of contemporary UK society.

  • Course description This is a secondary mathematics teacher training course for graduates, leading to qualified teacher status (QTS).

    On the course you
    • develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of teaching and learning in mathematics
    • learn to use relevant literature, research and educational theories relating to teaching mathematics and the wider curriculum
    • learn about the wider role of teachers in school
    • apply and develop your skills and knowledge on school placements
    • develop your skills of evaluation and critical reflection

    We help you develop the skills you need to be a successful teacher of pupils of all abilities. By studying with us you build your enthusiasm, confidence, knowledge and ability to teach mathematics.

    You also develop self-evaluation skills by completing a career preparation profile, which demonstrates you have the standards required for QTS.

    School placement is an important feature of the course, and we have strong partnerships with schools and colleges in the area.

    You complete two teaching placements in different secondary schools. A University-trained mentor who works in the school supports you when on placement.

    Your placements are complemented by University based study that includes teaching sessions, seminars, group study, tutorials and assessment.

    During the course you can choose to work towards either the PGCE or the professional graduate certificate in education (ProfGCE). Both qualifications achieve QTS but the PGCE also gives you 60 masters level credits, which you can use towards a masters degree.

    We have an excellent graduate employment record. Over 90 per cent of our mathematics PGCE graduates are teaching within six months of graduating, with the majority securing their future employment before completing the course.

    We support your work in schools with a programme of preparation and mentoring. You experience two continuous blocks of time on teaching practice. These are in two different schools and usually require some travelling.
