ObjectivesStudents can expect to gain from the course the skills and techniques required to undertake research at PhD level. The course provides a foundation from which students may develop their competence and confidence to tackle research problems, to evaluate critically both their own and others' research, and to communicate their findings effectively.
Entry requirementsThis course is intended for students already accepted to study for an MPhil or PhD in the Faculty of Science.

Course descriptionThe course is offered in both full-time and part-time modes, but most students are registered full-time.
Course members proceed through the course by taking units, for which credits are awarded on successful completion. The PgCert comprises two 30-credit units, which together provide the basic tools, skills and methods required for most scientific researchers.
The first semester of the course provides the basic tools, skills and methods required for most psychological researchers.
Depending on the student's subject, the first unit taken is one of the following: Research Methods for Laboratory Scientists; Research Methods for Earth Scientists; Research Methods for Health Researchers; Research Methods for Social Scientists.
The second unit, taken by all students, is Communication Skills for Research.
