Paediatrics and Child Health Studies (MSc-Diploma)

  • Objectives The MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health Studies is highly relevant to child health professionals working within both the acute and community sector. The course provides postgraduate inter-professional training on the health of children, and is designed to produce high quality graduates who are capable of meeting the present and future health and social care needs of children. The course provides a range of topics and options to meet the individual needs of students from acute and community sectors.

    At the end of the course students will be able to:

    * Access, critically appraise and evaluate relevant literature
    * Have an in-depth understanding of evidence-based practice in paediatrics and child health
    * Have developed an understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods relevant to child health research and audit
    * Demonstrate competence in written and oral presentation skills
    * Have an understanding of the importance of children’s rights to their health and health care
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:

    Applicants must hold a UK higher education degree at second class honours level or above, or a non-UK qualification recognised by the University as being equivalent to this. Applicants must have current professional experience of working with children within the EU, and be able to satisfy the University as to educational ability.

  • Course description Course Description:

    This is a part time course, which runs over two academic years, with 40 taught days. The course comprises a 2 day Introductory Module and is divided into a further 8 modules, 1 compulsory (core) module and a choice of 5 from 7 optional modules as follows:

    Compulsory Core Module - Research Audit and Evidence Based Practice

    Optional Modules (a choice of 5 from 7)

        * Disability and Chronic Illness
        * Safeguarding Children
        * Child Public Health and Epidemiology
        * Children’s Health and Rights within Society
        * Children’s Mental Health
        * Services to the Critically Ill Child
        * Palliative Care and Symptom Control

    Each module is divided into a 'Preparation' and a 'Synthesis' block. The former consists of a series of lectures/workshops covering the main module topics.  The topics which have arisen in the Preparation block are then studied in depth by the students and are presented to their colleagues during the Synthesis block approximately one month later.
