Occupational Medicine MSc

  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: Potential students must hold a medical degree from an approved institution. No experience in occupational medicine is necessary, although to sit the AFOM examination some relevant clinical experience is required.
  • Academic title Occupational Medicine MSc
  • Course description Course description
The programme is delivered by distance learning and is designed for all doctors working in occupational medicine who intend to prepare for the Associateship examination of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (AFOM). It also gives those who wish to pursue an additional academic qualification the chance to obtain an MSc in Occupational Medicine, awarded by the University. The programme adheres closely to the syllabus requirements of the AFOM. However, it also aims to furnish an overview of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene in the sphere of work. The third year of the MSc aims to impart a sound understanding of the theory, practice and methods required to carry out a valid piece of scientific research.

    The programme comprises four elements:

-Eight ring binders (course units), each containing specially commissioned text and associated supplementary material.
-Seminars: students are invited to Manchester for an Introductory Meeting associated with Course Unit 1. Subsequent seminars (one per course unit) each last one day and are organised regionally.
-Tutorials: you are allocated to Regional Tutors for Course Unit 2 (Epidemiology/Toxicology), and thereafter to a local personal tutor.
-Two four or five-day practical courses are held at the University. For the third (MSc) year, students participate in a five-day Research Methodology course (at The University) which is spread over the year. Some components of the programme are held jointly with students on the Distance Learning programme in occupational hygiene.
