Objectives
The aim is to provide students with the opportunity to create a challenging and rewarding master’s programme tailored to their personal development needs. Compulsory modules are kept to a minimum, with a wide range of modules available for individual selection depending upon personal goals. This freedom allows students to adapt their MSc as their studies progress, reflecting their career needs and personal interests. Students are currently preparing for nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant and clinical leadership roles.

Course description
Course overview
This programme has been developed to allow practitioners from both adult and children’s nursing the greatest possible flexibility in developing specialist skills and knowledge at a highly demanding academic and practical level.
Course content
There is a wide portfolio of optional modules available; students are also required to study core modules in order to complete the programme. Optional modules include a variety of subjects such as clinical leadership, physical assessment, medicines management, psychology and ethics.
Applicants should consider organisational and personal needs before applying for the programme – there are study patterns to reflect those with a desire to develop their careers in practice or in clinical management. Flexibility extends to the level of study required. Students can choose to take individual modules, link their study together for a postgraduate diploma in nursing or complete a dissertation for the full award of an MSc. The programme consists of 180 credits, 30 of which can be at degree level.
Students are also required to complete a dissertation within five years of starting the programme. The student selects the dissertation topic, which should be a subject related to their area practice.
All students receive a transcript of training, listing all their achievements for future employers.
Selection policy
Applicants should possess a first degree of at least second-class honours and have experience as a qualified registered nurse for at least two years. Applicants without a first degree will be considered, but they may have to take a degree-level module prior to registering for the MSc.
