  • Course description This unique award has been developed to focus on the technical aspects of securing wireless networks. It incorporates the expertise of two research groups in the Faculty of Advanced Technology – the Mobile Computing and Network Research Group and the Information Security Research Group.

    As wireless networks become increasingly prevalent, the problem of ensuring the security of those networks is an increasingly important issue.
    This award provides an insight into the different types of wireless networks, their operation and how these networks may be secured.

    This course is supported by Orange and every year we have two paid project placements with Orange, where you will complete a real project. There is great potential to secure employment after your studies. Additional arrangements are made with local companies such as Integral Mobile Data® for similar placements.

    Course Content

    The modules you will study are:

        * Wireless Security
        * Wireless Networks
        * Mobile Application Development
        * Network Security
        * Cryptography and E-commerce
        * Project Management and Research Methodologies

    You will also complete an individual project based on an approved topic of your choice.

    How To Study

    The course material will be delivered through lectures, tutorial, practical sessions and seminars, in addition to projects. The course is supported by a state-of-the-art mobile computing lab equipped with cutting edge wireless network and mobile devices – laptops, pocket PCs, PDAs, and mobile phones. The lab is sponsored by Orange and is linked to Orange Labs in Bristol through a high speed VPN connection. You will be assessed through written assignments, examinations and/or project work. The MSc includes the completion of a project documented in a dissertation.

    The development of wireless communication systems and networks in recent years has been prolific. Demand for graduates with the technical and managerial skills required to work with networks and wireless systems is high and continues to grow. As the industry develops and grows, so do the exciting employment opportunities.
