  • Objectives As a result of a worldwide shortage of transport and Infrastructure managers and engineers, there is an accelerated career progression for those with this new skill International students will enjoy an accelerated work permit process for transport and infrastructure engineers and managers The West Midlands of England, where the University is based, is currently experiencing a roll-on £1 billion investment in transport which has created huge demand for the specialist skills provided by this course Enabling the movement of people and goods, and helping establish supporting industrial, commercial and personal activities, modern transport is the key to the economic and social prosperity of communities around the world, and this Masters degree will provide a formal mechanism to address the issues inherent in the development of transport and infrastructure This vocational and exciting MSc with practical ‘hands on’ activities will result in graduates with skills that link directly to applications in industry, public sector and research environments As a consequence of undertaking the course, international students will naturally develop their knowledge of best practice in internationally significant transport projects As you progress through the programme, you will be encouraged not only to deepen your knowledge and further your intellectual development, but also to gain important new competencies and transferable skills Teaching within the programme includes a mixture of lectures, practical sessions, design and modelling classes, which cover both group and individual work with the context of transport and infrastructure projects The focus could also be on methods and research so that candidates wishing to pursue a PhD study will be prepared for this. In some cases, this can lead to publication in journals and attendance/presentation at international conferences You will become a member and part of the University-hosted Midlands Institute of Transport, and will be expected to seek appropriate industrial and public sector projects managed by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence The course’s flexibility means you can study at a level and rate to suite your individual career development needs, as well as those of your organisation/employer. It is possible to obtain the Masters with only one afternoon and evening study each week over 18 months (subject to availability of study module) *Please note that this course - available for a September 2008 start - is currently subject to validation.   • Entry requirements Normally, you should have a good Honours degree or equivalent. Substantial professional experience can substitute for graduate status. This experience could be practical, theoretical, managerial or regulatory in the related field, with a qualification equivalent to at least Higher National Certificate/Diploma We look for graduates with an appropriate Honours degree in management, transportation engineering, automotive, the built environment, mechanical engineering, transport planning, or civil engineering Graduates from other disciplines eg. computer science, and combined management and engineering, or from wider engineering backgrounds such as mechanical, electrical, automotive may still be eligible for entry. Candidates without the above qualifications are welcome to apply, however, they will have go through interview process prior to securing admission to the course You should also have a good standard of written and spoken English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent) If you are currently employed, we request a statement of support from your employer. If you are interested in part-time study, you may be eligible for Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL). You are encouraged to meet with the course tutor at an early stage of your application to discuss whether this is appropriate to your application

    Graduates from the course may find employment opportunities across a variety of transport and built environment related disciplines, such as a transportation engineer, transport planner, traffic engineer, traffic manager, transport system designer, urban planner, civil engineer, highway engineer, transport modeller, regeneration manager and infrastructure project managers

    Other possioble roles include transport safety manager, infrastructure design engineer, infrastructure manager, and intelligent transport systems consultant

    These opportunities will arise from governmental and local authorities in the UK such as Transport for London, Highways Agency, Department for Transport, Local Authorities and Regional Development Agencies. In addition, you may find employment opportunities in private companies in the transport and infrastructure development sectors such as Scott Wilson, Faber Maunsell, Atkins and others

    You may also head towards a career in research-oriented public and private organisations such as Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), Regional Development Agencies, British Research Establishment (BRE) and local authorities

    International graduates will have employment opportunities in similar governmental authorities and transport companies within their respective countries. They will also have the opportunities to work on Donor community-funded projects in their respective countries
