MSc System Level Integration

  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Applicants must hold a good Honours degree (2.2 or better), or a qualification or experience which is acceptable as equivalent, in computing, electronic engineering, physics or a related subject.
  • Academic title MSc System Level Integration
  • Course description MSc: 12 months full-time; 24-72 months part-time
    PgDip: 9 months full-time; 24-60 months part-time

    The programme is taught jointly with the Universities of Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Heriot Watt at the Institute for System Level Integration, based on the Alba Campus in Livingston.

    A number of scholarships and bursaries are available specifically to students of this programme. See website above for further details.

    Content

    This programme addresses the design of electronic systems. It includes courses which teach the many aspects related to system design, including embedded software, hardware design (both analogue and digital), system design implementation (chip, FPGA, board, IP) and vertical domain knowledge like broadband and wireless networks.

    The programme has a strong link with the electronics industry with presentations by engineers from the electronics design industry and use of commercial design tools for course work. You will join a learning environment that mirrors commercial design centres, with each student having their own desk in an open plan office area with computer and storage facilities.

    The skills and experience you will gain will significantly boost your employability in this field worldwide - and because project work is a major part of the programme, there is also the chance to spend time working with one of our industry partners.

    The programme features compulsory courses in:

        * System level integration methodology overview
        * Systems partitioning
        * IP block authoring
        * IP block integration
        * VLSI design
        * Embedded software for SoC and RTOS
        * Real life system level integration.

    You also select from a list of optional courses including:

        * Microcontrollers and microprocessors
        * Analogue and mixed signal design
        * FPGAs for DSP and communication
        * DSP for communications
        * Mobile and multimedia communication systems
        * Broadband networks
        * Embedded software 2 - sensor network systems
        * Embedded software 3 - networked applications
        * Introduction to verification (distance learning only)
        * Semiconductor design for test (distance learning only).

    Introduction to embedded software and Introduction to hardware design automation are available as optional introductory courses for study depending on your previous qualifications and experience.
