MSc Statistical Genetics

  • Objectives To develop skills in the application of statistical approaches to genetic modelling
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Good class of degree in mathematics or statistics or a degree with a substantial component of these subjects.
  • Academic title MSc Statistical Genetics
  • Course description Course Content

    -basic genetics
    -basic human genetics
    -population genetics
    -segregation analysis
    -genetic linkage analysis
    -association studies
    -mini review projects
    -major research project

    Teaching
There are nine modules in total.

Seven of the modules are lecture-based courses. These courses provide both formal lecturing and practical experience of the material, through illustrated examples, use of relevant software, and completion of appropriate assignments.

Two modules are mini research projects consisting of supervised/self-directed work leading to written and oral reports, which will be a vehicle for the students to develop their knowledge and critical abilities, focussing on specific research areas.

A substantial piece of research leading to a dissertation will be carried out after the lecture courses have finished. This will be on a topic of current importance in statistical genetics, and will be supervised by a member of staff, possibly in collaboration with an external researcher.

    Assessment
The seven taught modules will be assessed through completion of an assignment, given out at the end of the module and with a fixed deadline for completion. The two mini projects will be assessed primarily through the presentation of a written report. The major project will be assessed through written dissertation, with the additional requirement to make an oral presentation
