MSc Sport and Exercise

  • Objectives To develop knowledge, skills and expertise in a range of sport and exercise disciplines. You will be encouraged to develop your own programme of study by selecting modules which have particular relevance to your professional, academic and personal goals.
  • Entry requirements Applicants should normally have a good honours degree in an appropriate subject, or a degree plus experience, or additional acceptable qualifications. Applicants with extensive relevant experience in an appropriate field and evidence of an academic contribution to that field will also be considered.
  • Academic title MSc Sport and Exercise
  • Course description This course will prepare you for playing a leading role in the growth areas of sport and exercise. It stresses the relationship between theory and its professional application.

    More information

    Understanding Research
This module aims to develop a critical awareness of the strengths and weakness of the major research paradigms used in studying sport and exercise. It starts with an overview of the most frequently encountered approaches to statistical analysis and moves on to the more complex statistical models and tests. It also focuses on the appropriate selection, use and interpretation of statistical analysis.

    Exercise and Health Physiology
This module will provide you with the skills required in the critical evaluation of contemporary exercise physiology research. From this framework you will investigate physiological adaptations and responses to sport and exercise.

    Sport and Exercise Psychology
This module is calculated to develop your knowledge and understanding of the value and use of psychology in sport and exercise. It aims to foster your ability to construct empirically-based solutions to contemporary sport.

    Biomechanical Analysis of Movement
This module concentrates on using current technology to analyse sporting performing. This will involve collecting, analysing and interpreting data gathered in field and laboratory settings to inform the theory and practice of sporting performance.

    Sport, Values and Society
This module explores the philosophical, sociological and ideological underpinnings of contemporary sport. You will critique various theoretical frameworks for examining the values of sport.

    Motor Control
This module will critically evaluate, integrate and synthesise the extant literature on the leaning and performance of skilled behaviour. You will also do a small-scale study on advanced cue utilisation.

    Research Proposal
This module is designed to examine the strength, limitations and weaknesses of selected research approaches and how to match research design and methods to examine issues and problems in sport and exercise. It will help you to construct an appropriate research proposal.

    Dissertation
This module will help you apply learning from previous modules and new learning in conducting a substantial self-initiated research project.
